A weekend in the Sologne: what to do in 2 days from Romorantin
A weekend in the Sologne fits into 2 days from Romorantin: market and old town, Château du Moulin (21 min) and Mennetou-sur-Cher (18 min) on Saturday, Cheverny (31 min) and the Saint-Viâtre ponds (29 min) on Sunday.

The Sologne does not reward rushing: the villages are small, the roads run through forest and it pays to stop. This plan starts from Romorantin-Lanthenay, in the south of the region, and keeps every drive under 35 min on the first two days.
What can you do in the Sologne in 2 days?
Keep Saturday for Romorantin and the south, Sunday for a château and the ponds. That gives you a town, a medieval village, two very different châteaux and the watery landscape that defines the Sologne.
One practical point first: at the cottage, check-in is from 5 pm and check-out is before 10 am. A weekend therefore starts on Friday evening, and Sunday is spent sightseeing with the bags in the boot. For seasonal fairs and markets, check the events calendar on the Sologne Tourisme website.
Friday evening: arrival
Settle in, then walk into the centre of Romorantin, 5 to 10 minutes away, for dinner or to find the Halle where the market is held the next morning.
Saturday: Romorantin, a brick château and a walled village
- Morning: the food market under the Halle, then the old town and the banks of the Sauldre. Our guide to things to do in Romorantin-Lanthenay gives the route.
- Early afternoon: the Château du Moulin, in Lassay-sur-Croisne (21 min, 14 km). Built between 1480 and 1501, ringed by a water-filled moat and still lived in, it reopened to visitors in spring 2026. Check the visiting days on the official website.
- Late afternoon: Mennetou-sur-Cher (18 min, 16 km). The village keeps part of its 13th-century walls, 3 gates, 3 towers and timber-framed houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. You can wander freely, all year.
Sunday: Cheverny and the ponds
- Morning: the Château de Cheverny (31 min, 29 km), open every day of the year. Hergé used it as the model for Marlinspike Hall in the Tintin books, and the estate has kennels with about a hundred hounds.
- Afternoon: the Maison des Étangs, in Saint-Viâtre (29 min, 24 km), then the 1.7 km trail around the Étang de la Ville, on foot.
All driving times are from the cottage.
Which Sologne villages should you see with a third day?
With an extra day, head east into the Sologne of brick villages. The drives are longer, so allow the whole day.
- Souvigny-en-Sologne (53 min, 51 km): the church of Saint-Martin, begun in the 12th century and enlarged in the 16th, still has its caquetoir, a timber porch where villagers gathered to chat after mass.
- Pierrefitte-sur-Sauldre (42 min, 38 km): brick houses, the church of Saint-Étienne and, for a walk, the circuit along the Étang des Césars.
In autumn, swap that day for an evening at Chambord: our guide to the deer rut in the Sologne explains where to stand.
How do you recognise a Sologne village?
By its brick and timber. Building stone is scarce in this land of sand and clay, so houses were timber-framed, filled in with brick or cob, and later built entirely in brick.
Look for the patterns the bricks make between the beams, the long low roofs and, in front of some churches, the caquetoir. Mennetou-sur-Cher shows the medieval, fortified version; Souvigny and Pierrefitte the rural one.
Where do you eat in the evening?
At the house, most of the time: after a day of driving and walking, the Saturday morning market settles the matter.
The terrace has a barbecue and a table for six, the kitchen is fitted (oven, dishwasher) and the living room has a fireplace for cool evenings. If you would rather eat out, the centre of Romorantin is a 5 to 10 minute walk, so nobody has to drive home.
How does this weekend work for a group of friends?
Keep the same plan and stretch the evenings. The house sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms, with 2 double beds and 2 single beds: three couples, or two couples and two friends. There is one bathroom, worth knowing before you set the morning departure time.
- Table football and board games for after dinner.
- Free private parking: you can come in several cars without looking for a space.
- An enclosed garden and a terrace for drinks.
Why base a weekend in the Sologne in Romorantin?
Because the town sits between the pond country, the Cher valley and the châteaux. Nothing on the first two days is more than 31 min away, and you have a market, shops and a railway station on the spot.
Allow €130 a night for 4 guests, taxes and fees included, for the whole house. Check rates and availability, or find every outing and its driving time on the surroundings page.
