The red deer rut can be heard in the Sologne from mid-September to mid-October, at dawn and dusk. The French call it the brame: the roar of the stags as they call the hinds and challenge rivals. The easiest place to hear it is the Chambord estate, 43 minutes from Romorantin, where 5 viewing areas and 5 hides are open to everyone, free of charge, with no booking. To get closer you need a guided outing, and those are booked several months ahead.
This guide was checked on 6 October 2026, at the end of the season. Dates and prices are those of 2026. Nothing has been published for 2027 yet: the booking dates below tell you when to start watching the websites.
When can you hear the deer rut in the Sologne?
From early September to mid-October according to the French Biodiversity Agency. Chambord runs its outings from mid-September to mid-October. Stags roar mostly when the temperature drops, at first light and at nightfall. The local association Sologne Nature Environnement advises being in position from 6 pm in the evening, or at about 6.30 am.
The evening is easier to organise: you arrive in daylight and leave in the dark. In the morning you arrive in the dark, because the sun rises late at this time of year.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| 15 September | 7.29 am | 8.08 pm |
| 1 October | 7.51 am | 7.35 pm |
| 15 October | 8.11 am | 7.08 pm |
These times are calculated for Chambord, in French summer time (one hour ahead of the UK). Nobody can promise a roar: the organisers themselves warn that sightings are never guaranteed.
Where can you hear the rut for free, without a guide?
At Chambord. The national estate covers 5,440 hectares (about 13,400 acres), of which 1,000 hectares are open to the public. It puts its herd at 700 red deer. In the public area, 5 viewing areas for 50 people each and 5 raised hides for 4 to 6 people are free to use. Their locations are shown on the map of walks and observation points, which you can download from the estate's rut page (in French: “plan des promenades et observatoires”).
- Parking, the estate car parks are open 24 hours a day. The charge is €8 a day for a car, paid by card at the machines. Car park P0 is 600 m from the château.
- The drive, 43 minutes (40 km) from the cottage, with no toll. You drive back at night on forest roads: go slowly.
- Crowds, the hides only take 4 to 6 people. Arrive early and choose a weekday evening.
Elsewhere in the Sologne, most of the forest is privately owned, and there is no general right to roam in France. No tourist office recommends a free listening spot outside Chambord. If you try your luck from a public lane, stay on it and park well away from the rutting grounds.
Which guided outings are there, and what do they cost?
There were six options in 2026, from €17 to €250. All need booking, and most are full well before September.
| Outing | 2026 price | Age | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chambord, “L'écoute du brame”: hide in the closed reserve, 16 people, about 2 hours | €45 on weekdays, €60 at weekends | 12 | By phone, from 1 June |
| Chambord, “Au cœur du brame”: hide chosen by a guide, 4 people | €250 per group | 12 | By phone, from 1 June |
| Maison du Cerf, Villeny: museum tour then forest outing, starts 5.30 pm | Not published | 15 | From 1 April |
| Sologne Nature Environnement: outing of about 2 hr 30 | €17, free under 14 | Not stated | Up to 24 hours before |
| Plume de Nature: 4 hours, 5 km, 8 people, meal or breakfast included | €52 | 10 advised | Online |
| Domaine du Ciran, Ménestreau-en-Villette: deer kept in a park | Sold out in 2026 | 8 | By phone |
At Chambord, outings leave between 6 am and 7 am, or between 6 pm and 7 pm. Booking is by phone only, on +33 2 54 50 40 00. The Maison du Cerf is in Villeny, 36 minutes (33 km) from the cottage. Sologne Nature Environnement is based in Romorantin and gives the meeting point one week before the outing. Plume de Nature is an independent nature guide who works near Chambord. The Domaine du Ciran is in the Loiret, 62 minutes from the cottage.
An evening at Chambord, hour by hour
This is how a self-guided evening runs in early October, when the sun sets at about 7.35 pm. In September, shift everything 30 minutes later.
- 4.45 pmLeave the cottage
A 43-minute drive (40 km). Bring binoculars and warm, dark clothes, and leave the dog at the house.
- 5.30 pmArrive at Chambord
Parking is €8 a day, paid by card. Find your chosen viewing area or hide on the estate map before setting off on foot.
- 6.00 pmIn position, in silence
Phone on silent, no perfume, no rustling fabrics. You often hear the first roars before you see an animal.
- 7.35 pmSunset
The busiest moment. Stay until dark, with no torch and no flash: lighting up the deer is forbidden.
- 8.15 pmDinner or the drive back
Le Grand Saint-Michel, at the Relais de Chambord hotel, serves dinner from 7 pm to 10 pm; booking is strongly advised. Otherwise you are back at the cottage by about 9 pm.
What rules should you follow so as not to disturb the deer?
It takes several hours for the rut to settle, and a single human presence is enough to break it up. The French National Forests Office (ONF) sets out these rules:
- Stay on authorised paths and away from the rutting grounds. There is no need to go deep into the forest: the calls carry to its edges.
- Listen without seeking contact. Stags can be aggressive at this time of year.
- Do not bring a dog, even on a lead.
- Do not use a torch, car headlights or a camera flash: it is forbidden.
- Avoid pale or noisy clothing and perfume. Wear walking shoes and warm clothes.
Sologne Nature Environnement adds a few habits: whisper, do not slam car doors, walk slowly into the wind, and leave cigarettes and strong-smelling food in the car. The shooting season opened on 27 September 2026 in the Loir-et-Cher, one more reason to keep to the paths.
What about children, or avoiding a dawn start?
Chambord's free hides have no minimum age, but an hour of silence in the cold is long for a small child. Two daytime visits round the trip out well. The Maison du Cerf museum in Villeny opens from 2 pm to 6.30 pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until 30 November, and Tuesday to Sunday in the French school holidays. Admission is €6 per adult and €3 for ages 6 to 16. At Chambord, the guided forest tour by off-road vehicle lasts 1 hr 30 and costs €20 per adult, €15 for ages 3 to 17. Children under 3 are not allowed.
By bike, the “En forêt, sur la piste du cerf” loop is 15 km from La Marolle-en-Sologne, 31 minutes from the cottage, and passes through Villeny. Our guide to cycling in the Sologne describes it, and the one on the ponds and forests of the Sologne lists the trails open to the public.
Can you visit the château on the same day?
Yes, and it is the best use of an autumn day. The château opens from 9 am to 6 pm until 25 October 2026. Since January 2026 the ticket costs €31, or €21 for citizens and residents of the European Economic Area with proof. Visitors from the UK, the USA and other non-EEA countries pay €31. Under-18s go free. Our Loire châteaux in 3 days itinerary covers the visit in detail. The cottage is 43 minutes away: you drive back to sleep in Romorantin, in a house of 115 m² for 6 guests.
