Most visitors reach Romorantin-Lanthenay by road: three motorways lead here and the nearest exit is 8 min from the cottage. There is a train, on a small metre-gauge line, but it needs a change. Here are the routes, with driving times calculated without traffic and rounded to the nearest quarter of an hour.

Where is Romorantin-Lanthenay?

In the Sologne, in the south of the Loir-et-Cher département, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is a small town on the river Sauldre, between Orléans to the north, Tours to the west and Bourges to the south-east.

On the A71 or the A85, depending on where you come from. Both are toll motorways (tolls and traffic on Vinci Autoroutes) and meet near Vierzon; exit 14 of the A85, signed Villefranche-sur-Cher / Romorantin-Lanthenay, is 8 min from the cottage (6 km).

  • From Calais: about 5 h 30 for 500 km, driving time only. Add breaks, tolls and the Paris area.
  • From Lille, the usual way in from Belgium and the Netherlands: about 4 h 45 for 430 km.
  • From Paris: about 2 h 30 for 210 km. A10 to Orléans, then A71 towards Bourges. Leave at Salbris and finish on the D road, or carry on to the A85 and exit 14.

  • From Tours: about 1 h 15 for 105 km, east on the A85 to exit 14.
  • From Bourges: 45 min to 1 h for 70 km, north on the A71 then west on the A85, exit 14.

These figures come from a route planner, with no traffic and no stops. On a Friday evening out of Paris, allow extra.

Can you get to Romorantin by train?

Yes, with one change. Romorantin-Blanc-Argent station, 3 min from the cottage by car (2 km), is on the Blanc-Argent line, a metre-gauge regional (TER) line running from Salbris to Valençay.

From Paris, take a train from Paris-Austerlitz to Salbris, on the Orléans to Vierzon line, then change for Romorantin. Direct trains link Paris and Salbris in about 1 h 30. Coming from Tours or Vierzon, you change at Gièvres. Eurostar passengers arrive at Paris Gare du Nord and need to cross Paris to Austerlitz.

Check the service before you book. The line is being renovated and coaches regularly replace trains during the works: this happened in summer 2023 and 2024, then from 29 June to 29 August 2026 between Salbris and Romorantin. Timetables and replacement services are published on the TER Centre-Val de Loire website.

Which airport is best for the Sologne?

The Paris airports for choice of flights, Tours for distance. Either way, hire a car on arrival.

  • Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle: about 2 h 45 (240 km), including the drive around Paris.
  • Tours Val de Loire: about 1 h 15 (110 km). The airport has a few seasonal routes, including London Stansted in summer 2026: check the current schedule.

The châteaux, Beauval zoo and the Sologne villages are not linked by public transport: Chambord is 43 min by car (40 km), Cheverny 31 min (29 km). Our guide to the Loire châteaux from Romorantin lists every driving time. If you come by train, book a hire car in advance or ask us for advice.
