What are the best things to do in Sologne with kids?
A zoo, a horse show, ponds, a planetarium, a car museum and a swimming pool: seven outings lie within 45 min of Romorantin-Lanthenay. Two of them are less than 5 min from the cottage, which rescues a wet morning.
- Espace Automobiles Matra: 2 min, 1 km.
- Complexe aquatique Alain Calmat (indoor pool): 3 min, 2 km.
- Maison des Étangs: 29 min, 24 km.
- ZooParc de Beauval: 38 min, 48 km.
- Center Parcs Les Hauts de Bruyères: 42 min, 37 km.
- Pôle des Étoiles (planetarium): 42 min, 41 km.
- Chambord horse show: 43 min, 40 km.
Which activities suit which age?
Under 6, keep outings short and close. From 6 to 12, everything works. Teenagers go for water, cars and the night sky.
- Under 6: the small pool at the Romorantin swimming complex, a morning at Beauval focused on a few areas, and the enclosed garden at the house for naps and play.
- 6 to 12: a full day at Beauval, the show « Chambord, l'histoire à cheval » (an hour of stunt riding and dressage), and the Maison des Étangs in Saint-Viâtre, which offers a treasure hunt on a phone app.
- Teenagers: the Aqua Mundo water park at Center Parcs on a day ticket, the racing cars at the Espace Automobiles Matra, and a planetarium session at the Pôle des Étoiles in Nançay.
What can you do in Romorantin with kids on a rainy day?
Stay in town: the Matra museum is 2 min from the cottage and the indoor pool 3 min. Both fit into the same day, with no real driving.
- The Matra museum opens all year. It closes on Tuesdays outside French school holidays and opens 7 days a week in July and August.
- The Alain Calmat complex has two indoor pools and an ice rink. Public sessions differ between term time and school holidays, so check them with the town before you go.
- Further out, the Pôle des Étoiles (42 min) and the Aqua Mundo at Center Parcs (42 min) are both indoor outings.
And if nobody wants to go back out, the house can fill an afternoon: table football, board games, television, wifi, and a fireplace to light in the colder months.
Which outdoor outings work in good weather?
Beauval first, then the ponds and Chambord. All three call for dry weather and proper shoes.
The zoo opens every day of the year: our guide to planning 1 or 2 days at Beauval walks through the day. The Maison des Étangs opens from April to October (1 April to 31 October in 2026) and leads on to footpaths around the village ponds. At Chambord, the horse show runs from 4 April to 1 November 2026: book on the estate's website. For more family outing ideas and the events calendar, see the Loir-et-Cher tourism website.
How do you plan a family weekend in Sologne?
One big outing on Saturday, an easy day on Sunday. Check-in at the cottage is from 5 pm and check-out before 10 am.
- Friday evening: settle in, with a barbecue on the terrace if the weather allows.
- Saturday: Beauval (38 min), an early start, back for dinner.
- Sunday: the Matra museum in the morning, the pool or the garden in the afternoon.
- Monday: leave before 10 am, with a stop at Chambord (43 min) if you are heading north towards Paris or the Channel.
Why stay in Romorantin with children?
Because the town sits in the middle of the outings and the house is made for living together. No drive in this guide takes more than 43 min, and two activities are less than 5 min away.
The cottage has 3 bedrooms for 6 guests, with 2 double beds and 2 singles. The private garden is enclosed, the terrace has a table for six and a barbecue, and the kitchen has a dishwasher and an oven. Bed linen and towels are provided and pets are welcome. The town centre is a 5 to 10 minute walk.
