Where can a group of 6 stay near Chambord?
In Romorantin-Lanthenay, 43 min and 40 km from the château. L'Instant Tranquille is a whole house of 115 m²: 3 bedrooms (2 doubles, 2 singles), a fitted kitchen, an enclosed garden and free private parking.
Sleeping 6 under one roof is the hardest thing to find around a major site. In Romorantin your family or group stays together, eats at one table and sets off in the morning for a full day on the estate.
How do you plan a day at Chambord from Romorantin?
Leave in the morning, see the château before lunch and keep the afternoon for the estate and the horse show. Château de Chambord opens all year except 1 January and 25 December.
- Morning: a 43 min drive, then the château. The double-helix staircase stands at the centre of the keep, and the roof terraces look out over the chimneys and the forest.
- Midday: lunch on site, or a picnic made at the house the evening before.
- Afternoon: the formal French gardens, then a walk in the part of the estate open to the public. The estate covers 5,440 hectares and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Late afternoon: the horse show in season, or the forest hides in autumn.
Parking at Chambord is paid. Buy tickets on the official website, where prices and opening times are kept up to date.
What is the Chambord horse show?
« Chambord, l'histoire à cheval » tells the story of the château in one hour, with stunt riding and dressage. It is directed by Mario Luraschi and staged in the Maréchal de Saxe stables, next to the château.
In 2026 it runs from 4 April to 1 November. Show days vary through the season, so book on the estate's website before you fix the date of your visit.
When can you hear the deer rut at Chambord?
From mid-September to mid-October. The Chambord forest is home to 700 to 900 red deer, and the stags roar mostly at dawn and dusk.
Several hides are freely accessible in the public part of the estate. The estate also runs guided outings into the closed zone, by reservation. Bring warm, dark clothing and binoculars, and drive back carefully after dark: 43 min on forest roads where deer and boar cross. Other listening spots are covered in our guide to the deer rut in Sologne.
What else is there to visit around Chambord?
Two châteaux lie in the same area, on the way back to Romorantin. The Blois-Chambord tourist office lists other visits and events around the estate.
- Château de Villesavin (34 min from the cottage, 34 km): built for the man who oversaw the Chambord works, with a dovecote and a museum of horse-drawn carriages. Closed from mid-November to the end of February.
- Château de Cheverny (31 min from the cottage, 29 km): a furnished château open every day of the year, with its kennels and Tintin exhibition.

Why stay 43 min away rather than on site?
Because Chambord fills a day, rarely a whole holiday. From Romorantin you can go on to Cheverny (31 min) or Beauval Zoo (38 min) the next day without changing accommodation.
The house gives you what a hotel room does not: a kitchen with dishwasher and oven, a terrace with a barbecue and a table for six, a fireplace, table football. Pets are welcome and bed linen and towels are provided. Allow €130 a night for 4 guests, taxes and fees included, for the whole house: availability is on the rates and booking page.
One thing to know: if you want to stand in front of the château at sunrise several mornings in a row, a room in the village will suit you better. For one or two days at Chambord within a holiday in Sologne, a 43 min drive is enough.
